The most functional and complex room in your home is also the one where most of the largest décor debates begin.
Most major trends surrounding bathroom décor and design opt for a minimalist approach, partly to enhance the relaxation factor of a long soak but also out of practicality, as you cannot place carpets, textiles and wallpapers in the same way you would any other room due to the water and humidity.
Whilst it can be difficult to justify fitting a carpet in a bathroom (although mats and rugs have been effectively placed for decades), wallpaper can look amazing in a bathroom if your patterns are carefully chosen, your placement is perfect and you work with a wallpaper specialist on the right print.
Here are some top tips for fitting the perfect print to your bathroom.
Is Key
Cleaning, smoothing and priming walls is an important part of installing high-quality wallpaper in any room to ensure an easy application, but this is even more important for bathroom wallpaper which will rely on its application for structural rigidity.
Remove all the towel hooks, switch panels, holders, mirrors, light fixtures and anything you can possibly remove to get the easiest surface to work with.
Use a primer that suits the wallpaper you plan to use or the overall colour scheme of the bathroom.
Splash Areas
It goes without saying that paper does not like to get wet, so typically it is best placed on the furthest wall away from the bath itself. Not only does this help it work as an accent wall, but it avoids the risk of splashing that can damage the finish.
As well as this, do not fit wallpaper on the ceiling, as the rising heat from the bath and shower will do quite a lot of damage.
It Simple
Bathrooms are about relaxation, and whilst this does not necessarily mean the whole room needs to be an endless oasis of cream or off-white, it does mean that bold colours and patterns should be used sparingly, to avoid upsetting the relaxing mood of a room.
