Top Tips For Fitting Wallpaper Into A Home Office

One of the joys of working from home is the ability to personalise and customise your workspace in any way you desire to get the optimum working environment.

Whilst most people focus on ensuring their desk, seat and office equipment are right for them, one of the most subtly important aspects of your office which will have a big difference on productivity and your mood is your wall covering.

Whether you opt for flat colours or look into what a wallpaper specialist can provide, here are some top tips for making a beautiful wallpaper pattern work in your home office.

Colour Carefully

Whilst everyone has their favourite colour schemes, the colour of your walls matters for far more than aesthetic reasons.

There have been several studies which have highlighted how we are psychologically affected by different colours, and so your choice of colour can have a major effect not only on the end result of your office but also how much you will enjoy working in it.

Here are a few examples of colour schemes and their effects:

  • Greys and whites, whilst not a terrible idea, need to be mixed up with other colours, as white creates a sterile environment lacking in stimulus and grey can create a negative feeling.
  • Green is a colour that aids in concentration and helps keep the mind sharp.
  • Blue is a calming colour, increases concentration and can help with productivity under pressure.
  • Red is intense and full of energy and passion, but it can also be connected with anger.
  • Yellows and oranges are motivating, creative colours, but at the same time can be distracting.

Too Much Of A Good Thing

Unlike what some studies suggest, patterned walls are not inherently distracting and if a carefully chosen pattern related to your work is applied to the walls it can help boost productivity and motivation.

There is, however, a limit, and overwhelming patterns should be used sparingly as an accent to a much less busy pattern.

Front Or Behind

There are two schools of thought when it comes to accent walls; either the wall should be the one facing your desk, because your eyes will inherently rest on it, or it should be the wall behind you as it is the most striking feature of video meetings.

Ultimately, both can be correct, but make sure to choose one or the other. Having patterns on both sides with solid colours in between can make a room look much smaller than it is.
