How To Max Up Maximalism

Most of us are familiar with the concept of minimalism, a style of décor, architecture and wider design that uses the least amounts of material, colour and size in order to achieve its utility. But there is also maximalism, a contrary approach that can provide a wonderful array of fascination and aesthetic quality.

The appeal of minimalism is based on the notion that ‘less is more’, a sense of creating space and an uncluttered look. However, to others that can be bland and a little dull. As ever, individual taste matters.

However, as Homes and Gardens has noted, Maximalism has grown as a trend of late, perhaps because as we have spent more time at home, nobody wants to stare at four blank walls, but rather see points of interest everywhere.

The magazine was quick to note that this approach does not mean “embracing mess”, but, rather, creating an “Aladdins cave” look of interesting items, colour and pattern.

How, it may be asked, could your wallpaper choice fit in with this style? The experts talking to Homes and Gardens suggested contrasts of colours, the use of different patterns and bold hues.

Of course, this time of year is one where pundits are still producing their predictions about the trends for 2022 in everything from home décor to hair and fashion. For example, Good Housekeeping received a range of very different responses when asking what wallpaper styles will be in vogue.

Among the suggestions were the use of matching geometric patterns, the ‘big and bold’ look and Chinese wallpaper with lots of birds and trees.

It is easy to imagine any of these designs fitting in with a maximalist look, as all of them would provide a striking backdrop to all the other colourful and interesting features in a room, from rugs and furniture to pictures and ornaments.

With bold wallpaper, you could indeed turn your home into a place with a myriad of points of interest.
