How 19th Century Hall Could Inspire 21st Century Designs

If you want your wall to look great, bringing in a wallpaper specialist with a penchant for stylish and attractive designs is the way to go. But from where can the best inspiration come?

Some may follow the latest trends, but others might draw inspiration from the fine 19th century designs used in a grand property now owned by the National Trust.

The BBC reports that the wallpaper designs in view at Felbrigg Hall in Norfolk have been recreated by an interiors company, with wallpaper from an attic room and butler’s pantry at the 17th century property near Cromer being used to inspire the new designs.

General manager of the hall Ella Akinlade said: “We are so proud of the collection we have in Felbrigg... what they've been really clever with is that they've taken a tiny sample and managed to make a whole wallpaper."

As well as the hope that this will raise the profile of the property, the funds raised from each roll of wallpaper bought will help with the charity’s conservation work. This will be important at estates like Fellbrigg, where important work includes repairing a crumbling dam holding its lake in place.

Ms Akinlade suggested that the work at Felbrigg could be the start of a trend of historic National Trust properties being used to inspire 21st century interiors. She commented: "There's so many things we can take from National Trust houses to influence our own houses… we should absolutely be looking at them to decorate our houses now."

Of course, you can opt for an entirely modern and highly fashionable look if you prefer; Vogue has just declared that stripes are the interior design pattern to follow in 2024. But if it is vintage style you are after, it may be the National Trust and its historic properties have begun a fashion for reviving old styles from long ago that still look great today.
