Wallpaper is a wonderful way to add style, character, and warmth to your home. However, the wallcovering needs to be hung with careful attention to detail, in order to avoid time consuming and costly mistakes. Badly hung wallpaper can spoil the feel of a room, looking messy and unprofessional. Here are some common mistakes to avoid.
1. Rushing the preparation
If old wallpaper needs to be removed first, it is tempting to get stuck in with a scraper to get the job done quickly, and move straight to the hanging of your new rolls. However, if you leave an uneven wall with patches of dried glue and old paper, the new covering will not hang nicely.
Fill in any holes and sand over lumpy areas after old paper is removed, then wash the wall down so it is ready to apply a primer.
Choose a primer that’s appropriate for the type of wall, and apply a coat to ensure that you have the best possible surface for the new wallpaper to adhere to. The primer will also stop the wall becoming damaged or mouldy from the paste mixture.
2. Starting the papering at a focal point
If your paper has any kind of print, you will have to match the sheets to make sure the pattern meets up without any awkward changes of direction. However, no matter how carefully you plan, you will always have an end point where the last sheet won’t quite match up with the first sheet. Therefore, start in an unobtrusive place, such as over a door frame.
3. Not using enough paste
If you do not apply a generous amount of paste to the drop, you may end up with dry patches. This can lead to the dreaded bubbles, which are very difficult to get rid of once they appear. To avoid bubbles, apply the paste evenly, and smooth the hung paper out from the centre, rather than from the top down.
